SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR & JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT: NO BEEF!

Spoiler alert: two respected, female co-stars do not automatically translate into so-called enemies.

Despite speculation and “clues” surrounding the alleged bad blood between "I Know What You Did Last Summer"’s Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jennifer Love Hewitt, the iconic ‘90s actresses have nothing bad to say about each other. While social media may try to sway us otherwise, Deuxmoi is here to set the record straight once and for all.

Amidst the reprisal of the smash-hit 1997 slasher film, media outlets could not stop pitting Gellar and Hewitt against each other. Last December, Extra asked Gellar about Hewitt’s involvement in the movie’s revival, magnifying the fabricated tension. Gellar’s response showed not even a morsel of emotion or excitement, shifting her warm demeanor toward ambiguous denial. Deuxmoi heard through the grapevine that that was Gellar’s attempt to remove herself from the situation after she prematurely posted (and deleted) a photo on set of the film ahead of its official announcement. Fast forward to last month’s red carpet for IKWYDLS: news headlines targeted Gellar for failing to post any photos with Hewitt at the premiere, alongside any sort of tagged mentions.

But the ladies decided to enter the chat.

In mid-July, both actresses separately squashed the supposed animosity with statements. Hewitt spoke to Vulture, citing that “we’re good. I have no idea where this is coming from.” She added that the actresses have not been in contact since the movie wrapped…28 years ago. Meanwhile, Gellar defended herself in an Instagram comment: “I never got to see Jennifer Love Hewitt who is fantastic in the movie. I was inside with my kids when the big carpet happened. And unfortunately JLH didn’t come to the after party….But that doesn’t change how amazing I think they all are. Unfortunately some things happen only in real life and not online.”

And when the actresses’ own responses were not enough? Deuxmoi consulted a source close to Gellar herself: actor Jerry O’Connell (and Gellar’s ex-boyfriend). As addressed on Deux/U’s August 14th podcast episode, O’Connell denied the ongoing feud claims further, stating that he “never heard any direct animosity” from Gellar–and he was dating her during the late 1990s. O’Connell hypothesized any type of distance between the actresses could have been due to the nature of Hollywood’s “competitiveness.” He concluded that “everybody was up for the same role.” Just like two individuals vying for a job promotion, would you really want to remain besties for the public’s peace of mind?

So there you have it. From sources near and far, Deuxmoi can confirm that hearsay is just hearsay in the end. Both Gellar and Hewitt have achieved great personal and professional successes–from landing leading roles (one word: Buffy!) to creating families of their own.

Case closed.
