Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, a special moment in your life, or just craving a piece of cake, bakeries are a necessity. Especially during the love-y dovey season (no S/O required). And our favorite familiar faces couldn’t agree more...we all need a sweet treat every now and again.
Although it was hard to narrow it down, here are Deux’s favorite bakeries around the country (and across the pond!):
Milk Bar: With 10 locations around the United States and a New York staple, Milk Bar has been creating iconic baked goods for years. Even to this day, don’t be surprised if there’s a line out the door. Taylor Swift is such a fan of their Birthday Cake that she’s celebrated her birthday with it on more than one occasion. Ironically, Jason Kelce teamed up with Milk Bar’s founder, Christina Tosi to create a limited edition cereal cookie. Perhaps Taylor made the intro?
Flour Shop: Founder Amirah Kassem quite literally took the cake with her Rainbow Explosion Cake™–as in, the cake’s center explodes open with beautiful sprinkles after slicing it. The bakery is imaginative, colorful, and what our childhood dreams are made of. And to sweeten the deal, the bakery now offers a vegan and gluten free version of their Instagrammable cakes. Hailey Bieber, Kim Kardashian, and Paris Hilton’s daughter London have all celebrated birthdays with Kassem’s works of art. Note: accepting nationwide online orders only, with local deliveries in NYC and LA.
Sixteen Mill: You’d never believe this bakery’s rotating donuts, cakes, cookies, brownies, scones, breads, and more are vegan, gluten free, and refined sugar free. Although they keep their list of celebrity clients hush hush, owner and pastry genius Talia Tutak confirmed she baked a classic chocolate cake for an A-list singer’s party – she cried tears of joy when guests preferred her cake over a regular one! If you’re in Gowanus, it’s definitely worth a visit. You can taste the love that Talia kneads into her treats. Open from Thursday-Sunday.
Magnolia Bakery: You can’t visit Manhattan without stepping foot in what has become a New York institution since 1996. If Carrie and Miranda noshed on these cupcakes outside of their West Village location during an episode of SATC, you know it’s a vibe. The bakery is also famous for their bread pudding and even has a Pudding Club, where you can try their evolving pudding flavors. Karlie Kloss and Zoe Saldaña are just a few stars who have joined their cupcake craze over the years.
Yip Studios: Although there was tea spilled when owner Amy Yip revealed Kylie Jenner’s team declined her cake quote for a Khy event, the New Zealand-born cake designer is beyond talented – no validation needed from the Jenner clan. Her artistry is unmatched; it’s as if Alice in Wonderland and Dr. Seuss had a baby and became a whimsical cake artist. We could easily see these designs at an on-brand Met Gala. Some of the Bushwick-based bakery’s fans include fellow Kiwi Rosé, as well as Charli XCX.
From Lucie: Sometimes, you need to take the French countryside to the city, and Lucie Francde Ferriere did just that. Whether you snag one of her classic sea salt chocolate chip cookies or order a custom cake with fresh floral accents (oui oui), you’re in good hands. Lucie’s cakes have even graced the presence (and hopefully bellies!) of Harry Styles and Lorde. Blake Lively follows their IG page, so you know Lily Bloom’s stamp of approval gives the East Village spot extra brownie points.
Little Cupcake Bakeshop: Some (cup)cakes never go out of style, and Taylor Swift won’t disagree. The Soho-centric bakery has a slew of celeb fans – from Arnold Schwarzenegger (we know he’ll be back) to Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre to Paris and Nicky Hilton…the list goes on and on. Don’t miss their divine Brooklyn Blackout Cake while you’re there.
BCake NY: Miriam Milord took her background in art and pivoted into baking, which quite possibly was a match made in cake heaven. Per the owner herself, the female black-owned bakery is influenced by “the diverse art, people, and cultures of Brooklyn!” If you’re not in the market for a full-blown cake, opt for a super cute cake jar. Customers include: Jay-Z, Cardi B, Patti LaBelle, Alicia Keys, and Vera Wang.
Dominique Ansel: It would be a disservice to the cronutⓇif we didn’t mention the bakery that invented this donut + croissant phenomenon. With a new venture called Papa d’Amourset to open in April 2025, you have to get your hands on these innovative European delights – try the Cronut, DKA, and Cannelé. You know it’s saying something if Mr. Incognito Leonardo DiCaprio has waited in line for them. Martha Stewart and Heidi Klum are fans as well, though we can’t see them queuing around the block with us randoms.
The Love Bakery: While we’ve mentioned this bakery in a previous vegan-friendly line up, you can’t not order from this female-owned bakery if you’re vegan / gluten free/ into the refined sugar free lifestyle. The adaptogenic-friendly cookies are insane, the cakes are rich and nutrient dense, and Erica, the baker / owner /Jacqueline of all Trades, is an absolute delight. If everyone from rock legend Sting to Hailee Steinfeld to Gabriette Bechtel have indulged in these healthy treats, you know it hits the spot.
Cake Life Bake Shop: When Queen Bey wants a cake, you better deliver. There’s a reason why she and Jay-Z have ordered from thisPhiladelphian staple on several occasions—they’re just that good. We can’t wait to see what this shop whips up for the Cowboy Carter (Cake) Era. If you’re channeling your inner Sasha Fierce, order the Funfetti cake. With a solid lineup of cakes, cupcakes, croissants, quiches, and more, you will sleep well with these carbs.
Sweet Laurel: When common food allergies and preferences (dairy free, grain free, refined sugar free, keto) get in the way of enjoying desserts, head to this safe haven. Their cakes, cookies, cinnamon rolls, and brownies are *chef’s kiss*. Lauren Conrad and Mandy Moore are hooked on these good-for-you goodies. Support this bakery to make a difference; they were recently displaced from their Palisades storefront due to the Palisades Fires. Order online or visit their temporary Sweet Laurel Window in Santa Monica.
Sweet Lady Jane: While there was a ton of drama (and a brief closure of all six stores) before it was taken into new ownership, this LA bakery is back and better than ever. If the Olsen twins personally invested into SLJ circa 2014, then you know it’s a special spot. The Triple Berry Cake is far sweeter than a trip to your nearest cold plunge - just ask Gigi Hadid, Taylor Swift, or Kourtney Kardashian.
SusieCakes: I scream, you scream, we all scream inhale SusieCakes. With over 30 locations across the States, Susie has the magic touch. Demi Lovato enjoyed her “Happy Dirty 30 Demi” cake. Dr. Dre has ordered treats from their Brentwood address. Both Reese Witherspoon and Emma Roberts are on the Susie train too.
Betchin’ Cakes: Picture Barbie cake core to the max with Brittni Popp’s custom cakes. It’s hard to describe this bakery without glitter (AF), Bravo TV, dolls, neon colors, and a healthy dose of irony. It would make even more sense that Paris Hilton is a long-time customer. Sliving.
Hansen’s Cakes: If there’s one LA bakery that stands out from the rest for the Kardashians, look no further than this bakery stemming from seven generations. Order like a Kard or Jenner and get the White Cake with White Buttercream Frosting.
Doan’s Bakery: When you hear “Tom Cruise” and “cake” around the holidays, you should immediately associate it with this popular bakery in Woodland Hills. If you’re not on Tom’s good list (or perhaps, just waitlisted), order his classic holiday gift: the White Chocolate Coconut Bundt Cake. As if the icing on top, the cakes ship nationally!
Jordan Rondel: The incredibly talented professional baker has made custom cakes for her A-list clients, including Miley Cyrus (and her mom Tish’s wedding!) Margot Robbie, Lorde, and Flea. Sourcing only the best ingredients like Callebaut chocolate and European butter, her lavish cakes are regularly sought after from VIPs and cake connoisseurs alike. You'll instantly recognize her signature “diamond” chains and fresh flower decorations. Email or order on her site for delivery in LA.
Cake Monkey: If you thought your childhood was over, you thought wrong. This bakery is beloved by Will Smith, Amy Adams, and Jennifer Garner - who quite literally contributed to the bakery with wood from her own kitchen. They’re most well-known for their cakewiches, a cake sandwich icing in the middle (yes). This sweet-ery has something for everybody, ranging from bars, blondies, in side out s’mores (once again, yes), to cinnadoodles and a modern take on Ho Hos.
Nunchi: When you’re in the mood for something unique, try these gorgeous jelly cakes from Lexie Park. Best described as cake suspended in jelly, the visual appeal is worth an order–let alone the taste itself. Aside from the jelly cheesecakes, the cakes are all vegan and gluten free! Even The Weeknd has gotten in on the hype.
April’s Baker: In need of a Bridgerton-worthy confectionary? Insert this sister-run bakery. It’s giving high tea, it’s giving fancy, and it’s giving formal attire. Both Dua Lipa and Alexa Chung are supporters of this small business.
Lily Vanilli: If there’s a bakery that British stars flock to, you’re ordering from here. The owner filled us in on some of her starriest moments. Elton John and husband David Furnish received Lady Gaga-inspired canapes. Dua Lipa had a replica of her dog made in cake form. Kate Beckinsale and Eiza Gonzalez also enjoyed birthday cakes from the East London bakery. The Queen of the Chicken Shop Date, Ms. Amelia Dimoldenberg, had Lily create her 30th Birthday Cake, alongside another cake for her show.
Violet Cakes: Dubbed a “California style bakery,” you’ll be receiving the royal treatment at this gem. In fact, this bakery rose to fame soon after news broke that owner Claire Ptak was commissioned to bring Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding cake to life.
Sweet Mandy B’s: If you’re in the Windy City, you’re going to wind up at this sinfully sweet bakery. Although there aren’t any celebs on our radar (as of now), you’re getting the golden ticket to Hollywood if you try their treats -specifically any of the buttercream cupcakes.
Bittersweet Pastry Shop: Encapsulating French elegance with Midwestern TLC (and hints of Japanese and Mexican influence), you’ll understand why Ariana Grande (arguably before her vegan days) and Oprah have ordered from this bakery.
Alliance Bakery: Owner and Chef Peter Rios is a legend in the hospitality space. You’re going to feel like you’ve been transported to a Parisian paradise once you try his cakes, cookies, and/or pastries. Fun fact: Chance the Rapper once had a birthday cake created here - and they’ve collabed on cookies too!
Baked on 8th: What are you doing if you haven’t ordered Taylor Swift’s Lover-inspired cookies? This Nashville bakery is known for their decadent icing cookies, which Ms. Swift herself ordered circa the Lover Era. Maybe let your friends crash in the living room and grab a few pop tarts and cinnamon rolls while you’re at it.
Ivey Cake: Located outside of Music City in Franklin, this fantastic bakery has risen to fame with Katy Perry’s puppy party, Reese Witherspoon, and Carrie Underwood – from her wedding to her kids’ celebrations! Offering “designer treats,” you won’t regret ordering cakes or cupcakes from Ivey.
The candles may be blown out on this epic list, but one thing is confirmed: sugar rehab is in the not-so-distant future.
XOXO,
See you on the sugar high
